New Caledonia strike peaceful

5:11 pm on 25 September 2006

The general strike called by the Federation of New Caledonian Workers Union, or CSTNC, today over a range of concerns has not disrupted much of public life.

Union members are represented in various sectors, such as in mining , building and the port.

Our correspondent, Tuo Chinula, says unionists are striking in their work places, but are not blocking any public areas.

"The union hasn't decided to block public access to the city. The public aren't feeling it too much. The members of the union have gone on strike in their various work places, but it is not affecting the public too much at this stage."

Tuo Chinula meanwhile also says yesterday's rally called for by environmentalist group Caugern, Kanak activist group Rheebu Nuu, and various unions and NGO's, to protest against the Goro Nickel project, was peaceful.

She says demonstrators marched to the Goro Nickel site, asking for more public support and awareness about the project's possible negative environmental impact.
