Australia warns PNG about labour scam

1:43 pm on 27 September 2006

The Australian High Commission in Port Moresby has issued a warning to Papua New Guineans not to pay money to con men claiming they can organise agricultural work for them in Australia.

The High Commissioner, Michael Potts, says people should be aware of scams involving offers of seasonal labour in Australia when visas were not issued for seasonal agricultural labour schemes.

Pacific Island nations have been pressuring Canberra to open up its labour market for seasonal labourers.

But but the Australian government has rejected such a scheme despite support for it in a recent World Bank report and from Australian fruitgrowers in need of labour.
