Investigation into death of Indonesian fisherman in PNG underway

6:59 am on 28 September 2006

Papua new Guinea's deputy prime minister says the government has ordered a high level probe into the fatal shooting by the PNG defence force of an Indonesian fisherman along the border.

Three others were injured in the incident.

Don Polye says the Attorney general will lead the inquiry into last month's incident.

The family of the slain Indonesian have made a demand for compensation for the killing in a protest last month outside the PNG embassy in Jakarta.

Mr Polye says the government will wait until the details are fully verified before making a position on the matter.

"The relationship between the two sovereign nations has been very good and so it is at present. but we are of the view that the issue will be addressed more quickly by the two countries through their technical investigations teams that have already started work on the matter."

Don Polye has appealed to citizens from both countries to respect Indonesia and PNG laws.
