The Citizenship Commission and the Minister responsible for Immigration in Solomon Islands have been found to have granted citizenships illegally in the past.
An audit of the Immigration Division by the Auditor General revealed that a large number of applicants who had been granted citizenship had not met the 10-year residency regulation.
The audit revealed that 45 of a sample of 70 applicants failed to meet that basic requirement
Most of the cases uncovered by the audit occured in the years 2001 to 2003.
