Solomons government faces no-confidence vote

10:13 am on 6 October 2006

The stability of the 5-month old Sogavare-led Grand Coalition for Change Government will be tested this morning as they face a no-confidence motion in parliament.

Opposition Leader Fred Fono will be moving the no-confidence motion.

Mr. Fono has labeled the leadership of Prime Minister Sogavare as an embarrassment to the country and to the outside community.

Mr Fono would not divulge the grounds for the no confidence motion

Both camps have been holding late meetings to consolidate their groupings.

A correspondent in Honiara says the balance of power may be held by the group led by former Finance Minister Peter Boyers who recently switched sides to join the government

By late yesterday the Opposition had 17-confirmed members but was relying on the support of Mr Boyers and former Commerce Minister Francis Billy Hilly.
