New Caledonia bus strike affects Noumea

4:25 pm on 9 October 2006

A New Caledonian USTKE union strike against the Carsud bus company, which started at the beginning of last week, is continuing to disrupt bus services in the greater Noumea area.

The union is striking over the company's suspension of one of its workers.

Our correspondent, Tuo Chinula, says Carsud now only offers a skeleton service, but does so free of charge.

"They have got their minimum service going. They have two busses that are free plus plus a few other busses that they have hired. Public transport is actually free for users. So they've got a minimum service that is free for their users."
