Solomons AG Moti remains in PNG

5:05 pm on 9 October 2006

The suspended Solomon Islands attorney general, Julian Moti, could be confined to the Solomons High Commission office in Port Moresby for another week after his lawyers failed to have an arrest warrant against him lifted today.

Mr Moti, who is an Australian, is wanted by Australian authorities over sex offences against a 13-year-old girl in Vanuatu in 1997.

He has been holed up in the Solomons high commission office for a week now to avoid arrest by PNG police to face extradition proceedings.

A PNG National Court Judge, Cathy Davani, heard an application by Mr Moti's lawyers to stay the arrest warrant against him.

But she has adjourned the case until October the 16th to ensure all relevant documents are before the court.

Mr Moti's lawyer, Peter Pena, argued his client had been illegally detained and the Solomon's government wanted his urgent return to Honiara.
