French Polynesian business people express disquiet at tensions arising from blockade

Business leaders in French Polynesia have expressed their disquiet at the tension in Papeete where striking unionists continue to block key access roads to the capital, Papeete.

They have met officials at the French high commission to urge the authorities to ensure there won't be a repeat of the unrest of 1995 when much of Tahiti's airport was burnt down.

The union has been on strike to demand lower prices and to press the government so that it won't introduce new taxes.

The government has described the road blocks as a political move by the opposition and urged the French high commission to clear them as they are illegal.

The high commissioner says she prefers dialogue and won't use the security forces in Tahiti against French Polynesians.
