Kanak group pushes for stop to New Caledonia's Goro nickel project

New Caledonia's Rheebu Nuu group has called on its supporters to mobilise against the Goro Nickel project, which the Kanak organisation has described as being outside the law.

It has issued a statement calling on chiefs to join its campaign to stop construction of the two-billion US dollar project.

This comes as the group has been advised that its bid for an injunction will be heard by a Paris court next week to halt the project for environmental reasons.

The group says the mining laws date back to 1959 and are inadequate in the current situation.

It also says Goro Nickel's operating license was suspended by a Noumea court in June.
