Vanuatu faced with marijuana problem

8:13 pm on 18 October 2006

The Crime and Policing Commander in Vanuatu says marijuana is a threat to the country, and in particular its young people.

Concerns are being raised at the high number of young people using marijuana, and also the increase in cases of students using marijuana in some secondary schools.

Lt Col Aru Maralau says he has received reports of young people using the drug which he says has become a national problem.

He says the current problem is due to a number of factors.

"The police force have certainly not been very pro-active in making awareness and the effect of marijuana and even the elders traditional leaders and the families are not looking after the children as well, and we have a problem here."

Lt Col Aru Maralau says the best place that the problem can be tackled first is at home.
