In Solomon Islands, a new shipping company based in Gizo is getting its vessel from Australia.

Pelena Express director Nixon Silas told the Solomon Islands Broadcasting corporation that the boat can carry up to 24 adults and 10 children or alternatively take up to 3 tonnes of cargo.

He says the boat will be able to access lagoons and shallow waters, and its engine is being modified to enable it to operate on coconut oil.

The boat will initially serve islands in Western Province.
