Forum summit to hear from US diplomat on security and border issues

10:57 am on 25 October 2006

The United States Assistant Secretary of State, Christopher Hill, is to address a special plenary session of the Forum summit in Nadi today.

There is only limited information available on what Mr Hill will be discussing with the leaders, with officials saying only that it will include regional economic development and border and security issues.

The original Pacific Plan emphasised the need for Pacific Island countries to increase security to counter terrorism and money laundering, but the progress report said the definition of security needed to be broadened.

The Forum Leaders' communique supported those recommendations and says there needs to be a focus on border, political and human security issues while embracing regional safety and security needs.
