A tropical cyclone, which has affected Solomons Islands and is expected to hit Vanuatu later today, is weakening.

Winds at its epicentre were up to195 kilometres per hour, but they have eased to 165 kilomentre an hour.

Cyclone Xavier, which is currently east of Pentecoast, is slowly moving eastwards and is expected to move to the south south west within the next two-four hours.

The Vanuatu met service says Xavier is forecast to hit Vanuatu's main island, Efate, later today and residents should get prepared.

Meanwhile, the cyclone did reportedly not cause too much damage to the Tikopia island in the far south-east of the Solomons.
