New Caledonia's public broadcaster, RFO, says striking members of the CSTNC union have assaulted one of its journalists covering this morning's demonstration and taken his recording equipment.
The incident happened as the union members marched towards the SLN nickel company which has been hit by the strike now in its second month.
RFO says the violence used against the journalist is irresponsible and dangerous.
Its editor says such bahaviour is unacceptable in a country where there is freedom of speech.
He says after talks with union leaders the stolen gear was given to police.
In recent years, several senior journalists have been theatened and assaulted in Noumea.
