A non-profit organisation has been established in American Samoa to assist with infrastructure development and community service for Swains Island.

The island's delegate to the American Samoa House of Representatives, Alexander Jennings, said Swains Island Eco-Cultural Community Association was formed recently and is awaiting tax exemption status from the U.S. Internal Revenue Services.

He said the organization will focus on obtaining federal grants to assist in infrastructure development, such as roads, communications and utilities such as water and electricity, as well as alternative energy for the atoll.

Also said these grants will assist in improving education and health care for Swains Island, located about 200 miles north of the territory's main island of Tutuila.
