Australian warships bound for Fiji

2:36 pm on 3 November 2006

Australian warships are sailing towards Fiji amid speculation of another coup.

The amphibious support ship HMAS Kanimbla left Townsville last night and HMAS Newcastle, a frigate, began its journey to the area on Wednesday night.

The Australian Defence Minister Brendan Nelson stressed the navy would not enter Fiji's territorial waters without discussions first with Fiji authorities.

He has refused to rule out military assistance from Australia if the Fiji government asks for it, with Australian soldiers part of the navy deployment .
