SOPAC call to tackle threats of natural disasters

2:53 pm on 8 November 2006

There is a call for greater community action in the Pacific to ensure the region is better able to deal with natural disasters and hazards.

This comes from disaster specialist, Mosese Sikivou, who has just taken up a post as community risk programme manager for the Pacific Islands Applied Geoscience Commission, or SOPAC.

Mr Sikivou says tackling the threat of disasters is everybody's business.

He says governments and regional organisations have a commitment to helping communities, but the people themselves must be better prepared to protect what they have in the face of threats from cyclones, tsunamis, floods and landslides.
