Commander says Fiji PM is finished

5:34 am on 13 November 2006

Fiji's military commander says the prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, is now living on borrowed time in hanging on to to his political position .

Commodore Bainimarama made the comment to the Fiji Sun newspaper after the Great Council of Chiefs appointed a four-member sub-committee to mediate on the impasse between the military and the government.

Commodore Bainimarama says Mr Qarase had jumped the gun by telling the Council that he would not drop the three controversial Bills that are at the centre of the dispute.

He says this shows that the prime minister has washed his hands of the army and if that is the case, the army has washed its hands of him, and to the military Mr Qarase is finished.

Commodore Bainimarama says he had already told the prime minister this in front of the Council of Chiefs.

He says if it wasn't for the maturity of his officers, Mr Qarase would have been a goner after he failed to remove him as commander of the military 2 weeks ago.
