Police in Vanuatu's Malampa Province have remanded 16 members of a prayer group after they allegedly killed an 18-year old girl.

According to a report in the Daily Post, police say the prayer group leaders told the girl's parents that black magic had been performed to turn her into someone else.

The prayer group allegedly convinced the victim's parents they had seen a vision which confirmed the girl they thought was their daughter was in fact someone else.

They reportedly then ordered her stoning to scare the bad spirits to bring back their real daughter.

Police confirmed both the girl's parents, who come from north east Malekula, are also among those arrested, saying it was her father who took part in the killing.
