The Reuters news agency says Australia is considering whether to send security forces to Tonga to restore order.
The Australian Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer, speaking from Hanoi yesterday said he had been in touch with Tongan authorities throughout the day and continued to watch developments.
He said the prime minister of Tonga asked for Australia to keep a close eye on the situation there.
