More New Zealand police to be sent to Tonga

7:55 pm on 20 November 2006

The New Zealand Prime Minister says the decision to send more police officers to Nuku'alofa follows a Tongan request.

Six police officers went to Tonga on Saturday to provide security at the New Zealand High Commission and his residence after last week's riots and fires in the capital.

And Helen Clark says more police are now on their way.

She says the government is closely monitoring the situation in Tonga, which is calm at the moment.
