Fijian Affairs still confident of mediation role for GCC

The head of Fijian Affairs denies reports that the Great Council of Chiefs committee failed to secure a meeting between the Prime Minister and the military.

The organisation's chief executive officer, Adi Litia Qionibaravi, says the mediation committee wants to talk to Commodore Frank Bainimarama and the Prime Minister separately, before attempting to get them to meet.

Adi Litia says the committee's been assured by Commodore Bainimarama that the military will initially participate in talks with the committee.

"We need first to meet with the military, then we'll meet with the Prime Minister and then hopefully there will be the environment to engage both parties in dialogue. We'd like them to discuss the impasse, the strained relationship and see whether they can find solutions to the problem."

Adi Litia says committee supports both sides and is hopeful of a resolution to the impasse.
