Fishing vessels warned to steer clear of cyclone off Solomon Islands

7:50 pm on 23 November 2006

Cyclone Yani, which is currently on the eastern part of the coral sea south of Solomon Islands, is expected to turn westwards in the next 24 hours.

Heath Gullery from the New Zealand Metservice says the cyclone is slow moving and there are no severe weather bulletins for any island groups.

But Mr Gullery says shipping vessels should be on their guard.

"For any fishing vessels or anything out that way, they want to steer well clear of the cyclone, it's likely to generate a bit of swell. But at this stage in terms of damaging gales or heavy rain, it looks like its going to be missing any major populated areas for the near future."
