Samoa police charge sailor for alleged smuggling of unlawful gun

A sailor working on-board an inter-island ferry serving the route between Apia and Pago-pago has been charged by police in Samoa with the alleged smuggling of gun and a box of ammunition.

The suspect, according to police, was found in the possession of the illegal weapon which is a 38 special pistol with the ammunitions when the inter-island ferry, the Lady Naomi arrived back in Apia.

Sources say the sailor was caught by a senior government politician and not customs officers who were on duty at the time when passengers and cargo were cleared.

The allege offender is facing two charges, one of smuggling an unlawful weapon and possession of an illegal gun and ammunition.
