Police chief accompanying Fiji prime minister to Wellington talks

9:01 pm on 28 November 2006

Fiji's military has described as "totally out of line" a visit to the army camp by high commissioners of the United Kingdom and Australia and the US ambassador.

The Fiji Times reports that the envoys visited the Queen Elizabeth Barracks this morning and spoke with acting commander Captain Esala Teleni and Land Force Commander Colonel Pita Driti.

The paper says that while there have been no details on discussions its understood the envoys were seeking an assurance there would be no coup.

Meanwhile the paper reports that the Fiji police commissioner, Andrew Hughes, has accompanied Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase to Wellington for tomorrow's talks aimed at finding a resolution to the escalating crisis between the Government and the military.
