Fiji's military Commander says no elections for a long time - if demands not met

Fiji's military commander has warned that unless the government agrees to all his demands by midday today, there will be a new prime minister and no elections for a very long time.

Instead, the military will be ready to bring in an interim government.

Commodore Bainimarama says there will be no ministers of state or junior ministers and no political advisors.

He has also warned the prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, his chief executive Jioji Kotobalavu and the attorney general, Qoriniasi Bale, against any attempt to seek foreign intervention.

Commodore Bainimarama says he will hold these three men responsible if any of his soldiers get hurt.

Commodore Bainimarama has labeled the prime minister as a liar for statements from his office which said the commander had attempted to speak to the UN secretary general, Kofi Anan, this week.

He says he had never made any attempt to speak to Kofi Anan in the last month.

Commodore Bainimarama says the statements were attempts to threaten the military that its troops would be pulled out of United Nations peacekeeping, and he holds Mr Qarase and his team responsible.

He says the military has been doing peacekeeping work in many countries around the world and remains fully committed to it.

Commodore Bainimarama says he will brief President Iloilo on the military's plans this morning.
