Greens say Australia must end Pacific Solution

2:35 pm on 5 December 2006

The Australian Greens say, in the wake of Sweden stepping in to resettle an Iraqi man left on Nauru for five years, the Federal Government must end the Pacific Solution and stop relying on the compassion of other countries.

The Australian immigration minister senator Vanstone has told the Senate that the resettling of Mohammed Sagar is a successful resolution for the department of immigration.

It was announced at the weekend that a Scandinavian country would take Mr Sagar who won refugee status more than a year ago but has remained on Nauru because Australia classed him a security risk.

The Greens senator Kerry Nettle says to describe as a 'successful resolution' the mercy act of Sweden shows the warped approach the Australian government brings to dealing with refugees.

She says there are still seven Burmese refugees in detention on Nauru who are now suffering the same fate of indefinite imprisonment in a strange land which has left another Iraqi man, Muhammad Faisal, in psychiatric care.
