Union groups in Australia and New Zealand call on Fiji workers to resist coup

5:22 pm on 7 December 2006

New Zealand and Australian unions are supporting the call for workers in Fiji to demonstrate peaceful resistance to the military coup.

In a joint statement the Australian and New Zealand Councils of Trade Unions said the coup is clearly failing because it lacks widespread support.

The union organisations are encouraging the Fijian people to show their support for democracy.

They say that it is the ordinary working people of Fiji who suffer when democracy is overthrown by military and other elites.
