Fiji's deposed prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, will be facing arrest if he returns to the capital from his home village in the Lau Group.

The military's Land Force Commander, Col Pita Driti, has old the Fijilive news website that the army will not accept his presence in Suva.

Mr Qarase has been telling Australian media from his village that he will return to Suva this week and hold further talks with the military commander, Commodore Bainimarama, to restore democracy.

But Col Driti says Mr Qarase should face reality and concede defeat.

He says Mr Qarase must be "mad to travel to Viti Levu and say he wants his job back."

Col Driti says Mr Qarase is trying to make things worse by stirring things up.

He says for the sake of peace and stability people should not make threatening calls to provoke the army.
