Fiji's military commander, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, says security measures will remain in
force in Suva for the next few days because of on going concerns about possible unrest.
The Commodore said comments by the ousted Prime Minister, Laisenia Qarase, about returning to the
capital from his home in the Lau group of islands and the possibility of violence rising up had caused
concern.
"It now gives us reason to believe that Mr Qarase and his supporters are willing to resort to violence. Mr Qarase was the person who called for military intervention despite his assurance he would not do so."
The Commander says the checkpoints that are set up at major road junctions around Suva will remain for a
short time, but he says their presence is being reviewed daily.
