Australian sailor kills woman in New Caledonia

Police in New Caledonia say a drunk Australian sailor battered a 79-year-old woman to death after breaking into her house.

The sailor is part of the crew of the Australian naval vessel, HMAS Melville, which had docked in the capital, Noumea.

Police says he forced his way into her home and when confronted by the woman, he hit her repeatedly around the head.

She died of her injuries in hospital a few hours later.

Her husband, who is sick with Alzheimer's Disease, was unable to help.
