Fiji's Great Chiefs to meet next week over political crisis

7:42 pm on 11 December 2006

An emergency meeting of Fiji's Great Council of Chiefs will be held in Suva on Wednesday and Thursday of next week.

Radio Legend reports that this has been confirmed by the chairman of Great Council, Ratu Ovini Bokini.

Ratu Ovini says he has decided to call the meeting because of the current national crisis, caused by last week's military coup.

He maintains that Ratu Josefa Iloilo is still the president of Fiji and Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi his vice president.

The military commander, commodore Bainimarama, assumed executive authority over Fiji at the time of the coup but wanted the Great council of chiefs to meet and re-appoint ratu Josefa Iloilo as president so he could swear in an interim administration.

Ratu Ovini had earlier refused to convene a meeting for this purpose.
