Assassination threats against Fiji milititary chief Bainimarama

8:43 am on 13 December 2006

The Fiji Sun is reporting a plot to assasinate Fiji's military chief, Commodore Frank Bainimarama.

The threats include a deadline to withdraw and return Fiji to its normal state or face assassination.

The paper reports traditional warriors have told the military commander that if he does not withdraw troops from central Suva by next Wednesday, they will burn homes and vehicles in reprisal.

The Editor in Chief of the Fiji Sun, Russell Hunter, says they don't know exactly who is making the threats.

Mr Hunter says the army has confirmed the threat and is taking action against it.
