Deposed Fiji PM fears worsening dictatorship

3:51 pm on 13 December 2006

The deposed prime minister of Fiji says the country is sliding into a dictatorship comparable to Saddam Hussein's in Iraq.

Laisenia Qarase has called on the military to stop harassing people, saying what is being done is wrong.

Mr Qarase also says there is absolutely no plan to set up any government since he already heads the legal government.

"If it continues this way, we could be looking at a military dictatorship similar to dictatorships we have seen around the world and I did quote Idi Amin's time in Uganda, Saddam Hussein and one or two others. It would be most unfortunate if that happened in Fiji."
