Fiji military downplays threat to Bainimarama

8:28 pm on 13 December 2006

The Fiji military is down playing any threat to Commodore Frank Bainimarama's life.

A news paper report has spoken of a dissident group of traditional warriors who are demanding a return to a pre-coup state by Christmas or face what it calls the wrath of the people.

But the military spokesman, Major Neumi Leweni, says they aren't focusing on the threat:

"I appeal to all of you who are being influenced by people - dopn't allow yourself to be used. You will only put yourselves in harm's way."

Meanwhile, Major Leweni has said the armed forces are monitoring all transportation services to ensure that the ousted Prime Minister, Laisenia Qarase, does not leave his island in Vanuabalavu.

He said the military will not allow Mr Qarase to return to the capital for now.
