Fiji's military says it has intelligence officers across the country to keep a close watch on anyone planning action against Commodore Frank Bainimarama, who has set himself up as president.
But no evidence of any threat has appeared.

"The chairman of the great council of chiefs, Ratu Ovini Bokini, says he has no knowledge of any plot by a dissident group of traditional warriors. A report yesterday spoke of demands for the military to return everything to its pre coup state by Christmas day or face the wrath of the people, But a military spokesman, Major Neumi Leweni, says the army is ready if anyone if planning any sort of trouble. He says they are sure the commander is well protected and from that point of view such threats are a non issue. More than a week after the military took control here, the Fiji employers federation says nearly two thousand workers have now been laid off because of a down turn in the the economy due to the crisis."
