The Pacific Islands Forum is expected to release an official statement on the coup in Fiji shortly.

An official says the Forum is consulting with its 16 members before releasing a statement on the overthrow of the democratically-elected government, more than a week after it occurred.

New Zealand and Australia have imposed sanctions on the military regime and other countries in the region, including Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, Palau and Solomon Islands have spoken out against the coup.

The chairman of the Suva-based Forum Secretariat, Greg Urwin, remains on leave until January.
