The ousted French Polynesian president, Oscar Temaru, has appealed to the public to stay calm after his government was voted out of office by the assembly.
After the defection of two of his MPs, the opposition coalition passed a motion of no confidence with 29 votes to none as Mr Temaru's coalition boycotted the sitting.
He says he has lost a battle and not the war.
Fresh presidential elections have been called for December the 21st, but one of the government MPs, Tea Hirshon, says the election of a new president may have to wait until after Christmas.
"If the quorum which requires 35 people is not obtained, then it will be pushed to the 26th. The law says three days after. Three days after we enter Christmas, so we enter the 26th."
