Tonga defence forces warn against public gatherings or protests

10:16 am on 15 December 2006

The Tonga Defence Services, (TDS), has again strongly warned the public against any political gathering or move to stage any protest march or meeting that would involve five or more people.

The renewed warning covers the current emergency period, which has been extended from December 17 to January 17th, next year.

The announcement says that anyone who fails to obey the warning would be regarded as obstructing or opposing the work being carried out by defense services personnel and would be dealt with strongly.

The TDS says the warning is to avoid any further loss of life and to stop any march or political meeting that could threaten the Kingdom's peace and stability.
