American Samoa's residents asked to boil water

11:16 am on 18 December 2006

The American Samoa Power Authority has issued notices advising people to boil their tap water due bacterial infection.

The authority says that faecal coliform has been found in the water after heavy rains and the failure of a cholorination station.

More tests on the supplies are due to be conducted tomorrow.

But until results are in it is recommended that the public should continue to boil water for drinking, bathing and food preparation.

Many parents were angry that schools were not notified of the water situation and no measures were taken to stop children from drinking fountain water.

Parents are calling for the Department of Education to make arrangements to deliver bottled water to public schools or cancel classes this week.
