Fiji military regime gets support from former minister

12:27 pm on 18 December 2006

Support for the Fiji's military clean-up campaign of the deposed government has been expressed from several quarters including a former minister of the deposed SDL government.

Rajesh Singh, who was sacked as the minister of state for youth and sport for repeatedly calling for financial accountability from sporting bodies, says people should allow the military to complete its clean up.

Mr Singh says he was stopped from carrying out his own version of the clean up in sporting bodies when he was sacked in October.

Rajesh Singh says the commander is a good person and should be given all the help and support he needs in moving the country forward.

He says if the proposed interim administration is endorsed by President Iloilo, he would have no trouble serving in it.

Kadavu chief, Ratu Aca Soqosoqo, says the Great Council of Chiefs should make it easier for the military to carry out its clean-up campaign rather than become a stumbling block.

Ratu Aca says the chiefs should be humble and accept the fact that the military has taken control.

He says the Great Council supported the 1987 Rabuka coups and it should do the same now by throwing its support behind Commodore Bainimarama.

Meanwhile, a former coup convict now living in Australia, Maciu Navakasuasua, has called on the military to raid the headquarters of some churches and audit their books.

Mr Navakasuasua has told the Fiji Sun it was churches like the Methodist and the Apostle Outreach Fellowship whose leaders were in parliament preaching and supporting the 2000 coup.
