New Year's Block Party in Marshall Islands won't go ahead on a Sunday

7:07 pm on 18 December 2006

The Marshall Islands capital Majuro will not have its annual Block Party to bring in the 2007 New Year.

Yokwe Online reports the event has been cancelled due to concerns at the public consumption of alcohol on a Sunday.

Religious observance is a social and cultural force in the Marshall Islands.

For seven years, the Marshall Islands Visitors' Authority has sponsored the event which has been supported by local businesses and organisations.

The Block Party has been held in the downtown and business areas of the capital atoll, beginning in the evening on December 31 and continuing through the early hours of the new year.
