Fiji businessman announces major new investment

A Fiji business tycoon has announced the first major new investment in the country since the coup.

The chairman of Flour Mills of Fiji, Hari Punja, says investment in a 9-million US dollar brewery is to go ahead, with construction expected to start early next year.

Mr Punja says the brewery will provide 200 new jobs and produce three beers - a full strength brew, a low alcohol beer and an up-market boutique beer.

He says the company will bring in equipment from China and engage an overseas brewer to supervise the brewing process.

Mr Punja says the current coup does not deter him as he had continued investing immediately after the May 2000 coup.
