Fiji caretaker PM tells churches not to mix religion and politics

Fiji's military appointed caretaker prime minister, Dr Jona Senilagakali, has called on all church leaders not to mix religion with politics.

Dr Senilagakali says the churches should focus on moral values and spiritual issues rather than branding the military as a manifestation of evil.

The head of the Roman Catholic Church, Archbishop Petero Mataca, said earlier it was hypocritical of the churches to label the commander and his advisors as "manifestations of darkness and evil" when they did not say the same of those in the May 2000 coup.

But the president of the Assembly of Christian Churches, the Rev Tuikilakila Waqairatu, says they represent Christ - a much bigger power than the military.

The Rev Waqairatu says their fight is against evil which the military is succumbing to.
