Trip to Fiji for Forum Eminent Persons Group planned for early in New Year

11:31 am on 27 December 2006

It's hoped the Pacific Island Forum's Eminent Persons Group will make their visit to Fiji early in the New Year to discuss the political situation and how to return the nation to democratic rule.

The Secretary General of the Forum, Greg Urwin, has said the terms of reference for the group are acceptable to the military regime.

Mr Urwin reiterated that the crisis in Fiji must be resolved through negotiation, within the Constitution and with respect for the rule of law.

The group is expected to comprise members from Australia, Vanuatu, Samoa and Papua New Guinea, but a spokesman for the Forum, Johnson Honimae, says other details are still unclear:

"The eminent persons group will be meeting with the Fiji military regime in the early part of 2007. As to the specific dates, those haven't been finalised yet."
