Claims local gangs in Solomon Islands target Australian police

5:54 pm on 27 December 2006

The head of the Participating police force in the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands says local rioters are being paid to attack Australian peacekeepers.

The Daily telegraph quotes Will Jamieson as saying there is evidence that local gangs are sometimes paid as little as 5 dollars top cause disturbances.

Mr Jamieson says police were a target for rioters who destroyed most of Chinatown in the Solomons capital Honiara in April.

He says certain groups were co-ordinated from a politically motivated perspective to cause violence and disturbances in the streets to disrupt the process of government and democracy.

Mr Jamieson says such groups made co-ordinated attacks on Australian police, knowing police required communication and transport.
