Fiji military to control meetings of Great Council of Chiefs

11:25 am on 28 December 2006

Fiji's military commander, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, says the Great Council of Chiefs will not be allowed to convene further council meetings unless the military gives it clearance to do so.

Commodore Bainimarama says the GCC had failed to acknowledge the "reality of the situation on the ground".

The Commodore told Fijilive.com that he had hoped that the council would have utilised the meeting last week to come up with positive contributions towards the direction the country is now taking.

And he says he allowed the GCC to sit despite the State of Emergency currently in place.

He says he has since issued directions that as long as the State of Emergency is in place, the GCC will not be allowed to sit.

GCC chairman Ratu Ovini Bokini said he does not want to be caught in a confrontation with the military leader, but has asked that the GCC be allowed to conduct its affairs under the Fiji Constitution.

In its meeting last week, Fiji's chiefs recognised the 1997 Constitution as the supreme law and Ratu Josefa Iloilo as the rightful Fiji President.
