PNG teachers threaten more strikes

9:12 am on 29 December 2006

The start of the 2007 school year for students in Papua New Guinea's Central Province could be disrupted by a teachers strike.

The Post Courier newspaper reports that about 400 teachers stranded in Port Moresby decided on strike action after the Central provincial administration allegedly failed to pay their holiday entitlements, and some their leave and other entitlements for the past couple of years.

Teachers say they are so frustrated that they have decided to boycott classes next month if the provincial administration and the National Government does not make sure they are paid their entitlements.

Teachers nationwide are expected back at their schools on January 22nd before classes start.
