Samoan government uncertain over future of students studying in Fiji

4:28 pm on 3 January 2007

The Samoan government is expected to make a decision next week on whether to allow its students to return to Fji to continue their studies in the new year following the coup.

The government stresses the safety of its students is its top priority.

Our correspondent in Samoa, Autagavaia Tipi Autagavaia says the students are due back at the university this month.

"The government is not clear at the moment and they haven't made a decision yet whether the students from Samoa taking studies at the University of the South Pacific in Suva, Fiji, will go back to the university this month for this year's start of the school semester. The minister was following up on the prime minister's call about a month ago when the military regime took over in Fiji for the students to come back home, because of their safety."

Autagavaia Tipi Autagavaia says students may have to remain in Samoa and study extramurally.
