PNG newspaper publishes document over inquiry

5:25 pm on 4 January 2007

The Papua New Guinea newspaper, Post Courier, has published a document allegedly supporting its claims that the government was trying to hamper the inquiry into the escape of Australian lawyer, Julian Moti, to Solomon Islands.

Our correspondent, Alex Rheeney, says the newspaper published an original document after the government denied the allegations.

"The Post Courier has published a copy of a national gazette that had on it a scribbled note that was signed by the first legislative counsel to the government. The scribbled note was addressed to the acting prime minister and deputy prime minister, Don Polye, which implied that the government did seek his advice recently on how it can be able to dispense the inquiry."

Alex Rheeney says the government alleges that the document is a fake.
